Now if you’re just creeping out from under a rock about Batman, I don’t know what else to tell you. Must I name one of his skills – like being “The World’s Greatest Detective”? Uhm ok – what’s your point Tyrone? The point I’m making is that he is the perfect example of “a jack of all trades”. And yes, he’s a master of none of them – yet a well-rounded expert. But wait – there’s more! Batman’s “partner in crime”, Jim Gordon always receives the inside scoop on Gotham City’s underbelly from him. You know, the critical things that neither Jim nor his fellow colleagues can find.

This is why Batman (in Jim’s eyes) is the go-to personwhen solving difficult crimes.

I’m also one of the go-to people at my current job. This includes several years of warehouse experience – like order picking, shipping & receiving – and various P.I.T (Powered Industrial Truck) experience. Likewise, that Batman analogy illustrates me being the bird with various worms – or different skills. Also, AWAI (American Writers and Artist Institute) President: Rebecca Matter and Director of Training: Jade Trueblood discussed the importance of becoming an indispensable writer for a company long-term.

Rebecca & Jade also elaborated on their humble beginnings in the copywriting business – and their willingness & enthusiasm of getting involved into multiple projects. And that my friend is what I want to expound today. My goal for this blog is to not force action upon you – but highly encourage you to take action! Which is why I’ve presented 5 tips on being that non-expendable writer:

Absorb the business

Be ok with fear

Pitch ideas

Own the opportunities presented

Have fun

Absorb the business

“Your curiosity shows your value”

  Rebecca Matter: AWAI President

Absorbing every aspect of the business makes you a more valuable writer. Not that you must know every nook & cranny – but having that well rounded knowledge and skill set like Batman demonstrates that you’re heavily invested in the business. It illustrates your investment in this journey – for the long haul.

Be ok with fear

“Don’t condemn yourself for being afraid’

“It’s perfectly fine to have some fears”

Les Brown: Motivational speaker/Self-help guru

So, you’re experiencing writer’s block? Good – you’re not alone. Ok, you’re afraid to submit your very first blog. Great – submit it anyway. Ok genius, what if my article or blog isn’t good enough? No problem – “copywriting company XYZ” will highlight your strong & weak points. Another positive side is just by having the guts of acknowledging the fear of the outcome. The kicker is to not let that fear become your master. So, acknowledge it, deal with it – and move forward.

Pitch ideas

Rebecca emphasized the importance of being the person in the room who always has an idea. She further explained why it doesn’t matter about “the yes” – it’s about having an abundance of ideas that increases your value as that go-to person. And even if you don’t get the opportunity at that moment, it’s about your positive attitude – and willingness to learn & present ideas on a consistent basis.

Own the opportunities presented

“Start thinking of yourself as a valued partner”

 Rebecca Matter: AWAI President

Sometimes when you’re absorbing or heavily involved with the client(s) you’re writing for, they would usually offer you to write for them long term. This involves being on a retainer – just through your knowledge and understanding of what your client(s) vision is. Once you’ve discovered a writing niche, own it! And not only own it, but value also that opportunity – as if it’ll never be presented to you again.

Have fun

One of the major characteristics about Les is his brutal honesty – yet positive attitude to life in general. Just his high-pitched laughter alone is a force to be reckoned with – as if he’s always laughing at adversity. With decades of speaking to millions around the world, he’s pretty much having fun with his calling – and getting paid well.

Even Rebecca mentioned about herself getting better at copywriting – as well as having fun while learning as much about the business as she could. This is why your writer’s journey shouldn’t have to be “just work” – “and that’s all she wrote”. Have some fun while improving your craft – it’s free!

With all this “inspirational ammo” to gather up, why not load up on this wealth of resources to build your “writer’s nest”? If you want to be of value, be that reliable bird with various worms – keep those ideas and expertise swooping in!
